Overview
Water Technology was engaged by the Sunshine Coast Regional Council to investigate the planform development and stability of the estuary of the Maroochy River. Of particular concern was ubiquitous bank erosion, a process that persisted over many kilometres of bank length. Such erosion threatened opportunities presented by the cessation of cane farming, including the prospect of restoring riparian zones.
Water Technology assessed the current fluvial geomorphology of the estuary, in particular the processes influencing planform development and bank stability, through a literature review and site inspections. Amongst other issues, the morphology was found to have been impacted by a history of desnagging and by the erosive impact of waves induced by boating activities. The waves generated by boats were found to be a primary cause of the ongoing bank erosion.
To address the processes threatening bank stability, six soft engineering remediation techniques were developed by Water Technology based largely on the utilisation of timber and woody debris in concert with mangrove restoration. After close consultation with the client, the most suitable combination of remediation techniques were selected and developed into detailed designs, including construction drawings and specifications for implementation.
