Overview

Water Technology undertook a Geomorphic Overview of the Mornington Peninsula region to provide Melbourne Water with an assessment of the fluvial geomorphology of the catchments within the region. The objectives of the geomorphic overview were to provide Melbourne Water with knowledge of the key geomorphic issues in the Mornington Peninsula region and an understanding of how these issues should be managed.

The geomorphic overview involved a combination of aerial photo interpretation, ground truthing and literature reviews to gain insights into the current form and processes operating throughout the Mornington Peninsula region. An adapted version of the River Styles™ methodology is used to classify streams and to assist in identifying the dominant processes occurring in each reach. Upon gaining an insight into the key issues affecting stream geomorphology in the Mornington Peninsula region, recommendations were developed on how to best manage these issues. This geomorphic assessment will, along with other stream health studies, form the basis for the development of subsequent detailed planning documents throughout the various catchments within the Mornington Peninsula region.
