Overview
Floodplains are a vital part of Australia’s natural infrastructure. Our floodplains are fundamental to our local economies and quality of life. They support significant agricultural production, considerable residential development, high value wetland ecosystems and provide a pleasant place to live. However, flooding can result in significant damage to property and infrastructure located on the floodplain.
There is increasing pressure on our floodplain ecosystems from the competing needs of commercial, agricultural, recreational and residential interests. Careful planning and comprehensive assessment is required to preserve complex floodplain dynamics, maximise beneficial land and water use and safeguard our community.
A leader in floodplain management, Water Technology offers a comprehensive range of services to both regulatory authorities and the property development community. Further, Water Technology can provide additional services in waterway management, geomorphologic and ecological assessment, and community consultation services. With staff benefiting from over 25 years experience in the industry, we provide the understanding and technical excellence necessary to meet these specialised engineering and environmental challenges. We combine leading edge technology with outstanding project experience to deliver economic and environmentally sustainable solutions.
Senior members of the Water Technology team are playing an integral role in the revision of the best practice guide to flood estimation, Australian Rainfall and Rainfall. Further, Water Technology is actively involved in the practical application of recent research techniques to improve hydrologic and hydraulic analyses. In particular, Water Technology is at the leading edge of the application of two dimensional hydraulic modelling to urban catchments through the use of “rainfall on grid” approaches.
The impact of climate change on flood behaviour is emerging as a key challenge for responsible drainage authorities. Water Technology is across the latest research on the changes in rainfall patterns likely to occur due to climate change. The change in rainfall patterns is the principal driver underpinning flood behaviour under a climate change regime.
Selected Projects
Tooradin Flood Mapping and Drainage Investigation
Client: City of Casey
Water Technology was commissioned by the City of Casey to investigate the flooding impacts in a 5 year to 100 year ARI storm event in the coastal Victorian township of Tooradin. The study also involved the functional design and testing of mitigation works to reduce or remove the instance of flooding in the 5 year ARI event for both current and future development conditions. Toowoomba Regional Planning Project—Flood Study
Client: Toowoomba Regional Council
Water Technology was commissioned by TRC to carry out a flood study. As a specialist component of the RPP, work items included collation of existing flood data, provision of GIS layers of flood data to study team members, review of existing flood studies, other waterway and “pseudo-flood” data, and provision of advice on the applicability of existing flood and other waterway data for use in the Planning Scheme. Floodzone – Web based flood intelligence and mapping
Floodzone is a web-based flood mapping application that links property and inundation information through GIS aimed to improve emergency response planning before a flood event and operations during a flood event.
Floodzone has been jointly developed between Water Technology and Environmental Systems Solutions.
