Overview
Water Technology was commissioned by Watsons and Prudentia to assess the hydrodynamics, wave protection and coastal process impacts of the proposed Wyndham Harbour development, and assist in the production of an EES.
The proposed Wyndham Harbour will provide safe mooring to 750 boats within rubble mound breakwaters.
The project has included hydrodynamic modelling of the proposed harbour using a calibrated 2D model of Port Phillip Bay and Bass Strait to examine currents and flushing capacity within the harbour, and assess the potential for spread of anti fouling materials to sensitive areas around the development.
Offshore waves simulated within Port Phillip Bay by the MIKE21 Spectral Wave model were then used in Boussinesq modelling to assess the wave penetration within the harbour, and the harbour design was optimised to provide greater protection for a lower construction cost.
The sediment transport regime around the harbour was assessed and the impacts of the harbour investigated. Mitigation of negative impacts were designed and optimised to provide a positive solution to the client and the community. New beaches were designed at the harbour and construction and environmental plans established.
Dredging required for both the construction and maintenance of the harbour were modelled using the calibrated Port Phillip Bay model, and a dredging improvement and management plan established.
