Overview

Water Technology was commissioned by SKM on behalf of Mornington Boat Haven Limited to assess the hydrodynamics, wave protection and coastal process impacts of the proposed changes to the Mornington Harbour.

The new Safe Harbour included an offshore wavescreen and an upgrade of the existing pier to provide safe mooring to 750 boats at Mornington. Under current conditions, the moored boats are not well protected and are required to be removed during the winter months.

The project included hydrodynamic modelling of the proposed harbour using a calibrated 2D model of Port Phillip Bay and Bass Strait to examine the impact on currents within the harbour and the flushing capacity within the mooring area.

Offshore waves simulated by the MIKE21 Spectral Wave model were then used in Boussinesq modelling to assess the wave penetration within the harbour, and the harbour design was optimised to provide greater protection for a lower construction cost.

The sediment transport regime around the harbour was assessed and the impacts of the harbour investigated. Mitigation of negative impacts were designed and optimised to provide a positive solution to the client and the community.
