Overview

Water Technology in association with Vantree Pty Ltd was engaged by Parks Victoria to undertake a review of the more recent coastal processes occurring at Queenscliff. The implications of the coastal processes on the functional use of the Pier were considered and recommendations were provided for managing the coastal processes and maintenance of the Pier.  The coastal processes that affect the shoreline near Queenscliff are well known and have been subject to numerous studies over the last 30 or more years.  In addition there is good aerial photography of the area dating back to 1939 and so the response of the coast to the various engineering constructions near the Queenscliff Cut, to the seawall construction between Point Lonsdale and Queenscliff and to the changes in the dredging practices at Queenscliff are well documented and understood.

The consultancy was undertaken with the following scope of work:

  • A review of previous reports on the coastal processes occurring Queenscliff
  • An analysis and comparison of historical hydrographic surveys to infer the rates and volumes of accretion/erosion at Queenscliff.
  • A review of the more recent dredging rates and practices at Queenscliff and implications on the alignment of the coastline
  • A review of historical aerial photography to compare the relative locations of the coastline overtime
  • An assessment of the more recent coastal evolution and predicted future response of the coastline and the implications on the functionality and options for the future use of the Queenscliff Pier.
